Offshore Fishing Winter 2017

The fishing has been superb for big kingfish and a smattering of cobia over the last few weeks as the temperatures have been almost spring like.  We're afraid that the normal run of cobia may pass us by early as the coastal water temps have often exceeded 72° F and this signals cobia to move northward toward their summer ground near the Chesapeake Bay.
The real story has been the large schools of massive black drum, tarpon and other springtime critters moving along the beach as the comfortable temperatures are soaring and the fish are moving.  I don't know if this is going to last all February and into March, but it should be a hot spring in the offshore waters off Cocoa Beach, Florida.

The BIG Redfish are Here!

It's that time of year again, when the redfish get frisky and spawn. The large breeder redfish can be found in several locations on the Banana River between Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach. Look for large groups of fish adjacent to deeper water and shallow water grassflats.

Have fun looking for and catching these large fish, but make sure you return them to the water quickly so as not to harm future generations of redfish.

Where There's Food... There's Fish

Anglers often ask me how to find fish and what do I look for to locate fish and my answer more than often is "find food, find fish".  All animals (including fish) need food and the fall mullet run on Florida's east coast provides plenty of food for the predator fish like snook, redfish, sharks and jack crevelle.  Just look for the food, in this case the fingerling mullet are migrating down the coastline on their annual trek and the big game fish are shadowing the schools baitfish and you'll often see them crashing in the surfline off Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral.

Hurry up and call us before the mullet run subsides in the next few weeks. Our regulars just need to call Capt. Gina or new customers can go to our Cocoa Beach Fishing Guide website at Lagooner.com and contact us there.

Fishing Forecast

May - 2017 Fishing Forecast

May in Central Florida is the beginning of great things for people looking toward an ocean fishing trip looking for fast action. King Mackerel, Cobia and even a few tarpon start to make a showing as May develops into a more summer like pattern. Inshore the fishing can be productive for early morning and evening anglers as the sun warms the gin clear waters of the Mosquito Lagoon and the Banana Rivers. Both Redfish and Spotted Sea Trout will be a popular gamefish that even the youngest anglers will appreciate and enjoy. Bring plenty of sunscreen, some polarized sunglasses and broadbill hat as the Florida sunshine will penetrate the most protected boating endeavors. May is the beginning of the summer in Florida as far as the temperatures are concerned, but there's often an afternoon shower, so be prepared to fish early and get off the water before the afternoon storms roll in. So remember, inshore fishing and offshore fishing are an equal opportunity in May in Central Florida.
